Are you scratching your head trying to come up with creative stocking stuffers or gifts for your kids this Christmas? Don’t worry, we have you covered! Recently, Amy Morgan, PDAO’s Marketing Coordinator, shared a variety of unique, dental-themed gift ideas that are not only fun but will also encourage healthy habits, AND they’re all under $25! Here’s a roundup of her festive suggestions:

Educational and Fun Dental Books

Books make wonderful gifts, and there are several perfect picks for teaching kids about dental health and the tooth fairy. Plus, you can find all these titles easily on Amazon!

Dr. Seuss The Tooth Book: Available as a board book for little ones or in a classic hardback version—an enjoyable way to introduce dental care.

Toothbrushes are for Teeth (with Lilo & Stitch): A cute board book with favorite characters, ideal for introducing brushing to youngsters.

Tallulah the Tooth Fairy CEO: Explore how Tallulah runs her tooth fairy business—an engaging tale for kids aged 5 and up.

How to Catch the Tooth Fairy: From the popular series, this book is an exciting adventure about how the tooth fairy manages her secretive visits.

If the Dentist Were an Animal and What If You Had Animal Teeth?: These books combine animal fun with dental facts, complete with activities and creative illustrations.

Dentist-Themed Toys for Hands-On Play

Make dental care less intimidating and more interactive with these playful options carried by most local retailers:

Barbie Dentist Playset: Let Barbie be the pediatric dentist! This set includes a child patient, dentist tools, and accessories—perfect for sparking career dreams.

Play-Doh Drill & Fill or Silly Smiles Dentist Sets: Available in two versions, these sets let kids “play dentist,” create braces, and learn about dental care through creative play.

Electric Toothbrushes—A Gift That Keeps On Giving

Why not give the gift of a bright smile this season? You can purchase these through Pediatric Dental Associates and Orthodontics or at most retailers.

For ages 3 and up, consider the Oral-B or Philips Sonicare electric toothbrushes. The Oral-B line comes in fun princess or Spiderman themes, while the Sonicare offers bold color options and even comes with coloring sets and toothpaste.

For kids aged 8 and up, upgrade to the Oral-B IO series. These have soft bristles, interactive on-screen features, and even a smartphone app for tracking brushing habits—so parents can make sure teeth are really getting clean!

Water Flossers—Especially Great for Kids with Braces

Is your child struggling with flossing, or currently in orthodontics? Water flossers can be a fantastic addition because they make flossing easier and more fun for kids ages 4 and up, and are especially helpful for cleaning around braces and expanders. Just remember, water flossers should complement—not completely replace—traditional floss.

If you have any questions about your child’s oral health, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us via our website or by phone at (479) 582-0600. From all of us at PDAO, we’re wishing everyone a bright, healthy, and happy holiday season!

When you bring your child to Pediatric Dental Associates and Orthodontics (PDAO), you’ll notice right away that there’s something special about our team. In our most recent team talk, Amy Morgan, marketing coordinator, sat down with one of our longtime team members, Registered Dental Assistant (RDA), Hannah, to give you an inside look at what makes PDAO such a special place to work and bring your kids!

Hannah has been with PDAO for seven years, long enough to have seen the ins and outs of our practice, from patient smiles to behind-the-scenes teamwork. From recognition programs where staff can earn points for gift cards to appreciation days and family fun nights, Hannah emphasizes that there’s genuine concern for every member of the team. Additionally, Amy highlights something that isn’t always visible to patients and families: a unique culture of recognition and support. Whether it’s doctors leaving post-it notes to acknowledge a job well done, or team members stepping up to help one another, the culture here is rooted in kindness and collaboration.

One thing both Hannah and Amy love about PDAO is the collaborative approach among providers. With dental and orthodontic professionals working in tandem, every child benefits from the combined expertise of the whole team. For families, this means more comprehensive and thoughtful care all under one roof. Plus, pediatric dental and orthodontic care are co-located, meaning if your child needs a cavity fixed and also has braces, our dentists and orthodontists can coordinate care seamlessly, and sometimes even on the same day!

As someone who helps train new employees, Hannah knows how overwhelming starting a new job can be. She believes in checking in and helping new team members feel welcome. Outside of work, coworkers bond over concerts, farmers’ markets, and sharing memes, making PDAO more than just a workplace. However, it’s not just about team dynamics. Hannah gets immense satisfaction from making a difference for patients and families. This kind of care is foundational to PDAO, and even with high patient volumes, the team’s top priority is creating positive, stress-free dental experiences for every child.

To sum it up, the collaborative care model, the emphasis on positive experiences for both kids and their parents, and an environment where every team member truly cares is what makes PDAO so amazing. Whether you’re already part of the PDAO family or are searching for a dental home for your child, give us a call at (479) 582-0600 or visit our website to schedule your visit today!

Every year, the community comes together for an event filled with heart, hope, and a touch of circus magic—the Dream Big Gala. In this episode, Amy Morgan, marketing coordinator for Pediatric Dental Associates & Orthodontics, sits down with Peyton from the Children’s Safety Center (CSC) to give us an inside look at one of their most cherished local events.

For the Children’s Safety Center, the mission is clear: support child abuse victims and their families, offering advocacy, medical exams, therapy, and community education, all free of charge. The Dream Big Gala, now in its 10th year of partnership with PDAO, has blossomed into a vibrant, can-not-miss celebration, marked by its signature circus theme.

Set for July 26th at the Fayetteville Town Center, the gala starts at 6 pm (don’t forget, that’s an hour earlier than usual this year). The night promises dancing, delicious food from a variety of amazing local restaurants, circus acts, a live DJ, and, of course, connections to a truly worthy cause. If you’re a sweet tooth, the popcorn bar (with every topping you can imagine, from M&Ms to gummy bears) is back by popular demand, courtesy of the team at PDAO!

Can’t make it in person? You can still join the excitement (and support the mission) by registering for the online auction. From unique experience packages (like tasting dinners at House 1830 or a picturesque sailboat tour on Beaver Lake) to incredible items like a full orthodontic case, there’s something for everyone. And new to this year’s event, you can register for the “auction only” option online—no ticket purchase required!

Beyond the big night, the Children’s Safety Center prioritizes prevention. Peyton highlights how the CSC team offers training for teachers, doctors’ offices, families, and anyone invested in child welfare—both in English and Spanish. These sessions cover everything from mandated reporter education to general awareness, strengthening the community’s ability to recognize and respond to abuse.

Tickets (and auction registration) are available through the Children’s Safety Center website and on all social channels (find them as Children’s Safety Center of Washington County on Facebook and @cscwashco on TikTok and Instagram). Even if you can’t attend, share their posts, register for the online auction, or explore other ways to get involved, from volunteering to donating!

Whether you love to dance, can’t resist a good auction, or just want to make a positive impact, the Dream Big Gala is a night where fun and giving go hand in hand. Follow the Children’s Safety Center for updates and educational content, and join them in making Washington County a safer, brighter place for every child!

Stepping into the toothbrush aisle with a child in tow can be overwhelming. With so many colors, brands, and characters, how do you know which toothbrush is best for your child’s age and needs? In our recent video “Graduating from Your Toothbrush,” Amy Morgan, marketing coordinator for Pediatric Dental Associates and Orthodontics, shares practical advice to help parents confidently navigate this decision.

Amy begins by focusing on infants. The moment your baby’s first teeth appear, it’s time to start brushing—and size really does matter. For babies, begin with an infant-sized toothbrush, which you can find in both the baby and toothbrush sections of your store. At first, even wiping the gums with a damp washcloth or using a finger cot is sufficient until you’re ready to transition to a tiny brush with soft bristles. Don’t stress about the brand or character on the brush—the most important factor is always the size of the brush head.

As your child grows, make sure you stick to age-appropriate brushes. Amy recommends following the age ranges printed on the packaging, such as 0–3 years, 3–5 years, and 6+ years. These guidelines aren’t just suggestions—they’re based on recommendations from the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) and the American Dental Association (ADA). A properly sized brush ensures your child can reach all areas of their mouth effectively.

Kids often want to pick out brushes with their favorite characters. While this can make brushing more enjoyable, stick to the appropriate size—even if it means saying no to Spider-Man for a few more months! When in doubt, it’s better to size down than up; a smaller brush is always safe, but a brush that’s too big may not effectively clean little mouths.

Once your child is around age 6, their mouth is growing, so you’ll notice brush heads get slightly larger and handles more ergonomic. At age 10 and up, most kids can move on to a standard adult toothbrush. At this stage, packages may not list ages anymore, so choose a size that feels comfortable and effective for your child.

Amy also addresses a common parenting question: When is it okay to introduce electric toothbrushes? Electric options designed specifically for children can be introduced as early as age 3. Choose models with replaceable heads and appropriate-sized attachments. Fun features like built-in timers—and even Bluetooth connectivity—can motivate kids (and help parents keep tabs on their oral hygiene routines).

Whatever brush you choose, remember Amy’s golden rule: replace toothbrushes or brush heads every three months, or sooner if you notice any wear. The right size, proper handling, and regular replacement all contribute to strong, healthy habits that last a lifetime. By following these simple steps, you can take the guesswork out of the toothbrush aisle and empower your child to care for their teeth confidently right from the start!

As a parent, one of the biggest responsibilities is ensuring the health and well-being of your child, but with so many myths surrounding dental care, particularly for young children, it’s easy to overlook what truly matters. So this week, Dr. Garrett sheds light on some common misconceptions and offers practical advice for maintaining your child’s dental health.

Myth: Wait Until All Teeth Are Present

One prevalent myth is that there’s no need to bring your child to a dentist until all their teeth have emerged, but this couldn’t be further from the truth. Early visits can help prevent significant issues like early childhood caries. Many children can experience tooth decay as early as a year and a half. The sooner you start, the better equipped you are to prevent potential problems!

Myth: Sugar is the Sole Villain

While we often blame sugar for tooth decay, it’s not the only culprit. Refined carbohydrates, often found in snacks like Goldfish crackers and chips, can be just as harmful. These snacks are readily available and easy to offer but can significantly impact your child’s dental health. Dr. Sanders recommends being mindful of snack choices and frequencies, aiming for diet diversity to maintain healthy teeth.

Myth: Children Don’t Need Help Brushing

As Dr. Garrett points out, while children may be eager to brush on their own, they might not have the dexterity needed for effective cleaning. Many little ones struggle to brush thoroughly, making it crucial for parents to step in. Tools like plaque-revealing tablets can help assess brushing effectiveness. Remember, taking an active role now will save both you and your child future dental woes!

Myth: Pacifiers and Sippy Cups Don’t Impact Oral Habits

Understandably, pacifiers and sippy cups are part of growing up, but Dr. Garrett warns about the potential effects on dental positioning. Just as braces apply controlled forces to adjust teeth, these items exert pressure that can lead to open bites or palate issues if left unchecked. It’s important to monitor and adjust habits as your child grows.

Myth: Flossing is Only for Adults

Another common misconception is relegating flossing to the adult world. However, many kids experience tooth decay in the spaces where their teeth meet. Sugary drinks and snacks often find their way into these crevices. Adding flossing to your child’s routine, even periodically, can make a significant difference in preventing decay in these hard-to-reach areas.

Understanding these myths and facts can make a world of difference in your child’s dental health. Dr. Garrett advocates for proactive care from an early age to set the foundation for a lifetime of healthy habits. As a parent, staying informed and involved is the key to navigating your child’s dental journey with confidence!

If you’re a parent in Northwest Arkansas searching for the best dental home for your child, Dr. Garrett has a message for you! As one of the dedicated pediatric dentists at Pediatric Dental Associates and Orthodontics, Dr. Garrett is eager to share why PDAO stands out in the realm of childhood dental care.

At PDAO, the focus is on creating an environment that is distinctly welcoming and child-friendly. Every aspect of the office is specifically designed to neutralize anxiety, offering a setting that transforms what might otherwise be a nerve-racking visit into a positive experience. The practice boasts uniquely themed offices that kids love, helping set the tone for a cheerful visit.

One of the standout features of the practice is its team of multiple qualified providers, each bringing their own approach and personality. This variety ensures that there’s someone who can perfectly match the needs of your child. Dr. Garrett emphasizes that the diversity among the team means that every child can have a provider who suits them best, making dental visits a more personalized and comforting experience.

Additionally, a significant advantage of PDAO is its multi-discipline approach. Not only does it offer pediatric and general dentistry, but it also provides orthodontic care at both of its offices. This setup creates a seamless experience for families, allowing for both general dental care and orthodontic treatment to be handled in a way that saves time and reduces the number of dentist visits. It’s a convenience that busy families will surely appreciate!

In the operatory rooms, the emphasis is on creating an engaging yet relaxed atmosphere. The team is skilled at keeping children focused on the positive aspects of their visit, which helps alleviate any concerns and makes the experience as pleasant as possible. The goal is to provide an exceptional experience that leaves both children and parents thrilled with their choice of dental care.

In summary, Pediatric Dental Associates and Orthodontics is not just a dental office; it’s a place where children can feel at ease and where parents can trust in the quality and comprehensiveness of care provided. Dr. Garrett and his team look forward to welcoming you and showing firsthand why they believe their practice is the best choice for your child’s dental needs!

As April unfolds each year, a crucial spotlight shines on an issue that demands our collective attention and action — Child Abuse Prevention Month. At Pediatric Dental Associates and Orthodontics, we’re proud to partner with organizations like the Children’s Safety Center (CSC) in Northwest Arkansas to promote awareness, prevention, and meaningful community involvement.

Our recent chat with Peyton Stewman, the marketing strategist from the Children’s Safety Center of Washington County highlighted the core mission of the CSC and the significant role our community plays in supporting vulnerable children and families. Here’s a glimpse into the heartwarming and vital work being undertaken, as well as ways you can get involved this April.

Understanding the Children’s Safety Center’s Mission

The CSC serves as a beacon of hope and a resource hub for child abuse cases in Washington County. They offer essential services like advocacy, forensic interviews, medical exams, therapy, and prevention education. The core philosophy of CSC is child-centric, ensuring that these young individuals receive the care and support they deserve, without having to relive their trauma by navigating through multiple services.

April: A Time for Awareness and Action

April marks Child Abuse Prevention Month, a time to highlight prevention and underscore the importance of community awareness. This month is packed with activities to spread knowledge, encourage reporting, and yes, fundraising. As a nonprofit, the CSC relies on community support to maintain financial security, allowing them to continue their critical work.

Events and Initiatives to Support

1. Pinwheel Rally: Kicking off the month is the Pinwheel Rally on April 1st at CSC’s new location on Jean George Boulevard. The pinwheel symbolizes the carefree and joyful childhood every child deserves. This event is about awareness and community gathering, offering free hot dogs and ice cream, while educating about child abuse prevention.

2. Gives Day and Wear Blue Day: Gives Day is a prominent fundraising event, aligning perfectly with our mission in April. Following that, Wear Blue Day on the first Friday of April is a symbolic way to show solidarity. Don some blue attire and join us in supporting these young survivors.

3. Walkthrough Experience: Scheduled for April 18th, this immersive event leads participants through a gripping, educational journey that mimics the real-life experience of a child visiting the CSC. It’s a powerful opportunity to understand the impactful work being done.

4. Prevention Training: CSC also offers prevention training. This empowering session equips attendees with the tools and knowledge to identify, report, and help prevent child abuse.

Engage and Make a Difference

Additionally, throughout April, businesses and individuals have numerous opportunities to make a difference — whether by attending events, spreading awareness, or contributing financially. As Amy emphasized, we remain committed to ensuring the well-being of children in Northwest Arkansas.

The Children’s Safety Center is always looking for compassionate community members to join their mission. Their website, childrenssafetycenter.org, serves as a portal for information, event details, and donation opportunities. For further inquiries on how you can participate or contribute, feel free to reach out to us at PDAO, and together let’s champion a safer, more supportive environment for every child!

As a parent, ensuring your child’s well-being is a top priority, and oral health plays a crucial role in their overall development. One effective way to protect your child’s teeth from cavities is through the application of dental sealants. So this week, Dr. Garrett offers valuable insights into this preventive dental procedure.

A dental sealant is essentially a superhero for your child’s teeth, a thin, resin-based material that acts as a barrier against tooth decay. This procedure specifically targets the back teeth, particularly the six-year molars, which are prone to developing grooves and pits where food can become stubbornly lodged.

The magic of sealants is in their simplicity and effectiveness. The process is quick and painless—each tooth takes just about five to six minutes to shield. Dr. Garrett explains that it all starts with isolating the tooth to keep it dry. A liquid is then applied to prepare the surface, and then the sealant is hardened using a special light. Your child won’t feel a thing and can even enjoy a movie during the entire procedure!

You might be wondering how long these sealants work their protective magic—typically, they last about four to five years. Thankfully, most preventive dental insurance plans cover the cost. Plus, PDAO offers a perk: resealing at no charge if the sealant wears off, as long as your child remains a patient.

In summary, dental sealants are a simple, cost-effective, and highly beneficial measure in maintaining your child’s oral health. If you’re seeking to give your child’s teeth extra protection, consider discussing sealants with your dentist. Prevention is always better than cure!

Hello everyone! As we mark National Children’s Dental Health Month, it’s the perfect opportunity for us to emphasize the importance of your children’s oral health. This week, Amy Morgan, the marketing coordinator for Pediatric Dental Associates and Orthodontics, shares some invaluable tips and facts from PDAO.

Replace Toothbrushes Regularly

First, we recommend replacing all family toothbrushes every three months. Over time, and especially when subjected to the high pressure often applied by children, toothbrush bristles can flatten and lose effectiveness. Fresh toothbrushes ensure optimal brushing techniques and effective cleaning.

Additionally, if anyone in the household falls ill, it’s crucial to replace shared-space toothbrushes to avoid the spread of germs. For those using electric toothbrushes, replaceable heads should be changed every three months or after illness. If the electric toothbrush lacks a replaceable head, the entire unit must be replaced.

The Importance of Saliva

Did you know that your child’s saliva is a natural defense against cavities? Producing about a quart of saliva daily, it helps neutralize harmful acids and keeps the mouth clean. Ensuring your child is well-hydrated, particularly with water, supports this essential function.

Cavities

Cavities are more common in children than asthma and allergies. However, most cavities are preventable through diligent oral care habits: twice-daily brushing, regular flossing, healthy eating, and routine dental visits. Also, contrary to popular belief, baby teeth are not disposable placeholders. They play a significant role in future smiles. Untreated cavities in baby teeth can affect the developing permanent teeth below. Moreover, premature loss of baby teeth due to severe decay can lead to spacing issues, impeding the proper alignment of permanent teeth.

Unique Smiles, Unique Care

Every child’s smile is as unique as their fingerprints. Personalized dental care, like that provided at our offices, ensures that each child’s unique dental development is monitored, and any potential issues are addressed early. Taking care of your child’s teeth not only promotes a beautiful smile but also contributes to their overall health. National Children’s Dental Health Month serves as a reminder to reinforce good oral healthcare habits at home and schedule those essential six-month dental checkups.

If you have any questions about your children’s oral health—whether it’s about brushing techniques, cavity prevention, or orthodontic needs—don’t hesitate to reach out. You can contact us at 479-582-0600 or email Amy directly at amy@smilesarrewild.com.

Do you know that February is National Children’s Dental Health Month (NCDHM)? This week, Amy Morgan shares some insights about NCDHM, including the significance of this special month and tips on how you can ensure optimal oral health for your children!

National Children’s Dental Health Month is an annual event celebrated every February, thanks to the American Dental Association. It serves as an opportunity for dentists, educators, and parents to come together, emphasizing the importance of early childhood oral healthcare. Here at PDAO, our goal is to ensure that every child has a great foundation for taking care of their teeth, which includes proper brushing, flossing, and healthy eating habits.

Tips for Celebrating NCDHM at Home

There are a variety of things you can implement at home to celebrate NCDHM and to help your children maintain excellent oral health, with the first one being brushing twice a day. It may seem obvious, but brushing twice a day – once in the morning and once at night – is crucial for maintaining oral health. You can make this fun for your children by creating charts, playing games, or using music during brushing time. Encourage them to use a timer to ensure they brush for the recommended two minutes.

Second, flossing is equally important, especially for teeth that touch, which often starts around the age of three when molars come in. Initially, you’ll need to help your child with flossing, but over time, they will become proficient at it. We also recommend using floss picks, which can be easier for children to handle compared to traditional floss.

Additionally, a diet rich in fruits and vegetables is essential for dental health. Try to limit your child’s intake of sugary snacks, particularly sticky and chewy candies or gummy snacks, which tend to get lodged between teeth and can cause cavities. Surprisingly, even carb-heavy foods like chips, crackers, and goldfish can contribute to dental issues if consumed excessively.

And lastly, ensure your child sees a dentist at least twice a year, with appointments typically scheduled six months apart. Regular dental visits are crucial for professional cleanings and early detection of any potential issues. We understand that as a parent, introducing all these habits at once can be overwhelming. Give yourself some grace and focus on one aspect at a time. Whether it’s establishing a regular brushing routine or introducing flossing, small steps can lead to significant improvements in your child’s dental health!

At PDAO, we’re here to support you and your family with any questions about your child’s dental needs. Feel free to reach out to us at our office by calling 479-582-0600 or email me directly at amy@smilesarewild.com.
