National Children’s Dental Health Month

Do you know that February is National Children’s Dental Health Month (NCDHM)? This week, Amy Morgan shares some insights about NCDHM, including the significance of this special month and tips on how you can ensure optimal oral health for your children!

National Children’s Dental Health Month is an annual event celebrated every February, thanks to the American Dental Association. It serves as an opportunity for dentists, educators, and parents to come together, emphasizing the importance of early childhood oral healthcare. Here at PDAO, our goal is to ensure that every child has a great foundation for taking care of their teeth, which includes proper brushing, flossing, and healthy eating habits.

Tips for Celebrating NCDHM at Home

There are a variety of things you can implement at home to celebrate NCDHM and to help your children maintain excellent oral health, with the first one being brushing twice a day. It may seem obvious, but brushing twice a day – once in the morning and once at night – is crucial for maintaining oral health. You can make this fun for your children by creating charts, playing games, or using music during brushing time. Encourage them to use a timer to ensure they brush for the recommended two minutes.

Second, flossing is equally important, especially for teeth that touch, which often starts around the age of three when molars come in. Initially, you’ll need to help your child with flossing, but over time, they will become proficient at it. We also recommend using floss picks, which can be easier for children to handle compared to traditional floss.

Additionally, a diet rich in fruits and vegetables is essential for dental health. Try to limit your child’s intake of sugary snacks, particularly sticky and chewy candies or gummy snacks, which tend to get lodged between teeth and can cause cavities. Surprisingly, even carb-heavy foods like chips, crackers, and goldfish can contribute to dental issues if consumed excessively.

And lastly, ensure your child sees a dentist at least twice a year, with appointments typically scheduled six months apart. Regular dental visits are crucial for professional cleanings and early detection of any potential issues. We understand that as a parent, introducing all these habits at once can be overwhelming. Give yourself some grace and focus on one aspect at a time. Whether it’s establishing a regular brushing routine or introducing flossing, small steps can lead to significant improvements in your child’s dental health!
