Hello everyone! As we mark National Children’s Dental Health Month, it’s the perfect opportunity for us to emphasize the importance of your children’s oral health. This week, Amy Morgan, the marketing coordinator for Pediatric Dental Associates and Orthodontics, shares some invaluable tips and facts from PDAO.
Replace Toothbrushes Regularly
First, we recommend replacing all family toothbrushes every three months. Over time, and especially when subjected to the high pressure often applied by children, toothbrush bristles can flatten and lose effectiveness. Fresh toothbrushes ensure optimal brushing techniques and effective cleaning.
Additionally, if anyone in the household falls ill, it’s crucial to replace shared-space toothbrushes to avoid the spread of germs. For those using electric toothbrushes, replaceable heads should be changed every three months or after illness. If the electric toothbrush lacks a replaceable head, the entire unit must be replaced.
The Importance of Saliva
Did you know that your child’s saliva is a natural defense against cavities? Producing about a quart of saliva daily, it helps neutralize harmful acids and keeps the mouth clean. Ensuring your child is well-hydrated, particularly with water, supports this essential function.
Cavities
Cavities are more common in children than asthma and allergies. However, most cavities are preventable through diligent oral care habits: twice-daily brushing, regular flossing, healthy eating, and routine dental visits. Also, contrary to popular belief, baby teeth are not disposable placeholders. They play a significant role in future smiles. Untreated cavities in baby teeth can affect the developing permanent teeth below. Moreover, premature loss of baby teeth due to severe decay can lead to spacing issues, impeding the proper alignment of permanent teeth.
Unique Smiles, Unique Care
Every child’s smile is as unique as their fingerprints. Personalized dental care, like that provided at our offices, ensures that each child’s unique dental development is monitored, and any potential issues are addressed early. Taking care of your child’s teeth not only promotes a beautiful smile but also contributes to their overall health. National Children’s Dental Health Month serves as a reminder to reinforce good oral healthcare habits at home and schedule those essential six-month dental checkups.
